Meta-cognition and Learning Powers
METACOGNITION IS LEARNING ABOUT LEARNING
Teaching children strategies for planning, monitoring and evaluating their learning
Self-regulation is a willingness to engage our metacognitive skills
So what? The benefits include:
A potential gain of 7 months (EEF, July 2021)
High impact for low cost and low additional teacher workload
Based on extensive evidence
“When tasks are more complex for a pupil, the quality of meta-cognitive skills rather than intellectual ability I the main determinant of learning outcome.” (Hattie, 2007)
How is it used in the classroom?
We use the word ‘learning’ not ‘work’
Tasks are exciting and developing!
Children identify the learning power that the learning skills are using
We teach children about growth mind-set, attitude and self-belief
Our learning powers are linked to our school Christian values (respect, perseverance, courage and friendship)
Explicit teaching of strategies to help planning, monitoring and evaluating their learning (see cognitive crew)
Reflection questions and spiritual journals are used to reflect on the focused learning power
What are learning powers?
The terms Learning Powers describe the skills and attributes a learner needs to tackle problems confidently and successfully. We identified 7 powers:
Concentrate
Never give up
Cooperate
Be curious
Use your imagination
Keep on improving
Have fun!
